Individual Case Studies - Investigations Skills training
The Department for International Development (DfID)
The DfID contacted Conflict Management Plus Ltd when they recognised that, during a period of growth and modernisation, some difficult issues were arising around line managers' ability to deliver effective dispute resolution. Line managers were reluctant to confront the issues in a timely fashion. Managers who were handling investigations felt unsupported and that they lacked the requisite skills. The HR department recognised that there was a degree of inconsistency in different people's approach to investigation.
While recognising a future need around conflict prevention, the DfID wanted to take the opportunity to position the revised process in a strategic context. The significant change is that the role of the line manager is representing the 'corporate' body rather than individual members of staff. The new procedures have line managers managing the process with HR support. Conflict Management Plus Ltd trained a pool of investigators; new procedures were streamlined and best practice guidelines developed for investigators.
