July 07 - Dec 07: Tenders
PRESS RELEASE: MOD chooses Conflict Management Plus Ltd as provider of mediation services
Conflict Management Plus Ltd has been awarded the tender to supply external independent mediation, and train and quality assure internal mediators, for the Armed Forces. The contract, to run until 2010, means that service personnel across the whole of the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force are being encouraged by the MOD's leaders to access mediation speedily and locally, in cases of discrimination and harassment.
The contract is part of the agreement signed by the MOD and the EOC in June 2005, on preventing and dealing with sexual harassment in the Armed Forces.
The scale of the planned mediation provision demonstrates the MOD’s continuing commitment to handling complaints appropriately and increasing their personnel’s confidence in their complaints system. The principle aim for the MOD is to resolve disputes between personnel and restore operational effectiveness through a resolution which is satisfactory to all the parties involved, in the fastest way possible and at the lowest possible level. Line managers remain key to preventing and dealing with harassment and conflicts at work - and now expertise from outside the chain of command is also available. The MOD’s highest priority in selecting a provider was its opinion of the quality and effectiveness of the proposed mediation and training service. Conflict Management Plus Ltd have over 16 years’ track record in this area and won the tender in the face of stiff competition from the UK’s other mediation training providers.
Katherine Graham Director of Corporate Affairs at Conflict Management Plus Ltd says:
“Clearly the armed forces have special pressures on them, and are rarely out of the news – the last thing they need is bad feeling within their own teams. It’s vital that the people serving in the forces know that relationships with others in their team are free from conflict and tension, so they can all work together and focus on the task at hand. Mediation will help them to move beyond differences, and get back to the mutual trust and respect that is so vital to their work. The MOD is really embracing the potential of mediation and we particularly appreciate the thorough, tri-service approach its taking. We are delighted to be working with the MOD on this challenging work.”

We CMP are actively supporting EMNI's key aims.
This initiative is based on the idea of establishing an information point on the various application sectors of Mediation facilitating an open exchange of information and knowledge between mediators from practice and science, and promoting the communication on the methods of alternative dispute resolution (ADR / Mediation) in relation to the general public in Europe. Finally, it is expected that mediation service providers in Europe will explore their common need for quality assurance of their work.

1st European mediation conference success for CMP
John and Katherine delivered two workshops at the prestigious event attended by over 350 delegates and held in Vienna on 27-29 September. We are delighted our new Senior Mediation Practitioner, Lesley Allport, was also at the conference.

John said “It was fantastic to have over 100 people in attendance and fascinating to hear CMP’s ideas about workplace dispute resolution translated live into 3 languages!” Katherine Graham gave delegates an advanced training workshop on ‘Taking the adversity out of diversity’ – handling power issues in mediation. Both workshops were extremely well received and we thank the European Institute for Business Mediation for inviting Conflict Management Plus Ltd to take part.

July 07 - Dec 07: FEDR
FEDR event - Celebrating the In-House Mediation Service
This was a fantastic day with a high turnout of FEDR members at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham. The day focused on and strengthened the in-house mediation service. We:
- Explored results from our in-depth research carried out in 2006-2007 assessing current practice.
- Strengthened the business case for investing in a mediation service and assessed the national figures of how many in-house mediations are actually taking place, placing a value on the need for an in-house mediation service.
- Looked at the marketing of an in-house mediation service. How different styles of marketing can be key to establishing credibility and trust. Showcasing the different approaches used by FEDR members.
- Identified what can you do next to build on your in-house mediation service.
- Opened opportunity to network and discuss your mediation service with others.
25th September 2007
FEDR event - Bridging the Divide: Part 2
The follow-up FEDR event went down very well with our FEDR members and we were very pleased with a fully-booked turn-out for Bridging the Divide: Part 2 (picking up where we left off). The event was a drama-based day looking at joint mediation sessions.
Further to it's launch last year our best practice network group FEDR now has 127 members and is growing every month. We are looking forward to updating the FEDR FORUM over the next month to make it more interactive and accessible to members. Keep an eye out for more details, all members will be notified individually.

Results of CMPs survey
Following responses from clients to our recent survey, Conflict Management Plus Ltd are carrying out changes to the organisation. Our trading name for dispute resolution services TroubleshooterUK is no longer in operation and all services under this banner such as mediation, investigation, facilitation and coaching will be known as Conflict Management Plus Services. All personal e-mail addresses and contact telephone numbers will remain the same. You will notice that all proposals and materials relating to Conflict Management Plus Services (formerly TroubleshooterUK) will be re-branded with the existing CMP logo. Deborah Casey - the former TroubleshooterUK Coordinator will be known as the Dispute Resolution Services Manager.
For those purchasing training courses, we will be developing an online client area in order to provide you with downloadable documents including pre-, on-, and post-course materials as well as a bank of background reading, templates and other relevant materials. This will be piloted towards the end of 2007 with the hope of going live in early 2008.
Finally, John Crawley will now be known as the Director of Training and Consultancy. We were pleased to note that survey results indicated clients felt CMP were helpful to them beyond the specifics of our tasks and that we help the client to redefine their view of the situation. John’s new role will enable CMP to work more closely with those clients who require more consultancy or are in need of further advice within the conflict management field.
Further results can be found in our latest edition of Equilibrium 20.
