We all know what it is like to occassionally be irritated by our neighbours. Most people sort these differences out for themselves using a combination of tolerance and negotiating skills. However it is becoming increasingly difficult for some to make peace with their neighbours. In the UK, over 10,000 neighbour disputes have been resolved with the help of local specially trained people. Hackney Housing created a new policy in 1993 on complaints by neighbours about neighbours. This book outlines the results of their feasibility survey.
Good Practice Guidelines for Social Landlords and Service Providers (report £10 +P&P)
This good practice guide aims to help social landlords, front-line staff, residents, communities and policy makers practical guidance in how to get the most out of mediation, irrespective of which type of service is available locally. If you have no service locally, it will give you a clear idea of the standards to aim for when considering how to give residents access to a quality mediation service. The guide contains:
- a checklist of the essential areas to consider for providing a good quality mediation service
- practical guidance to social landlords about what they need to do to get the most out of a mediation service
- proposed standards, specifications and examples of good practice for existing mediation services or new ones, irrespective of type of service
- a section covering the particular quality issues for in-house mediation services provide housing managers and front-line staff with an additional avenue for responding effectively to resident complaints and disputes.
