2.4 Managing without bullying
Bullying and harassment are issues that still raise controversy in UK organizations and society. Some believe that no one should be subjected to unacceptable behaviour, and that those bullying and harassing need straightening out, correcting in some way - punished if necessary. Others argue that anti-bullying, fair treatment and dignity at work policies are simply a whingers-charter and that managers should be allowed to manage - toughly if they need to. People who sustain bullying and harassing behaviours demonstrate a lack of skill, limited awareness of the impact their own behaviour on others, and a misconception about the appropriate exercise of power. Training managers in constructive conflict management, positive leadership skills and win/win problem solving can avoid a lot of problems, allowing management to happen without abuse of power.
Our course will enable participants to understand bullying and harassment and its impact in the workplace. They will be encouraged to understand the difference between strong management and bullying, and be given the confidence and skills to manage people constructively.
