5. The frontline series

Managing stressful situations at work

Stress absence is an unavoidable sign that something is seriously wrong. The UK loses over 12 million work days every year from stress-related absences – and a good many of those taking time off with stress have reached the end of their tether with a colleague, boss or junior.

We believe some stress-management consultants put the cart before the horse; they claim that stress costs an organisation in increased levels internal conflict.  We believe that it is unresolved internal conflict which causes stress.

We have put together two new approaches to managing stress caused by conflict at work.

The first is a one-day stress management course which focuses on giving people effective communication skills. The programme also covers the legal situation, managers’ responsibilities, and action plans.  However, it is simply not good enough to teach someone to manage stress caused by conflict as though it is their responsibility alone – stress arising from bad-quality interactions and relationships can only to be resolved through effective, robust needs-based communication skills.  We have one course for managers and one for frontline staff. The course for managers covers how to give guidance and manage without “dumping” their own stress on to their team, how to listening empathetically and of course their legal responsibilities - including options for when staff are imploding.

Full details of the training course are available by clicking here.
